On Monday evening, May 16, 2016, the Combined Board of Directors of Harper Hospital and Anthony Medical Center met in the Harper Public Library to listen to presentations by two architectural firms being considered for the proposed new hospital facility. The Combined Boards are interviewing four architectural firms for the preliminary phase of the joining together process. The two other firms will be interviewed at 5:30pm on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at Anthony Medical Center in their Education Center.
The interviews are occurring early in the planning process to determine the cost estimate for the proposed facility. The selected firm will first determine the space requirements, the size or footprint of the facility, a single line drawing, and the size of the site required. From this, they will estimate the cost of the project. They will also produce a simple sketch of the facility, but will then stop any further design work until approvals from the State of Kansas, Center for Medicare Services, and District #5 are completed.
The cost estimate is necessary to develop the financial forecast or budget for the project. This also helps determine the funding required for the project. The United Methodist Health Ministry has funded a grant to cover the initial architect and legal fees as well as administrative costs. The Ministry wants to help insure the long term future of healthcare in Harper County and to develop a model for the future hospitals in rural Kansas. No funding will be necessary from the Community for this first phase.
Just like the first round of architectural presentations, the public is invited to attend the second round of architectural presentations at 5:30pm on Wednesday, May 25, 2016. Community members are also encouraged to attend the next Combined Board Meeting on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 7:00pm in the Chaparral High School Auditorium.
