On Friday July 1, 2016 Senator Jerry Moran conducted a Community Town Hall Meeting for the Residents of Harper County. During his talk and legislative update, he said one of his main interests continues to be the sustainability of rural healthcare in Kansas. I first met Senator Moran while I was CEO of the Hospital in McPherson, Kansas and he has always been a champion of rural healthcare in our State, both as a Representative and as a Senator. He shared with the group that in his experience, the results are always positive when two hospitals join together. He then described a sad and disappointing personal experience with the closing of Mercy Hospital in Independence, Kansas last fall. He was at a meeting in Independence where he had the misfortune of announcing that after 135 years of having a hospital, the town would no longer have one because Mercy Hospital was closing that day. This happened even though negotiations had just broken down to join together with Coffeyville Regional Medical Center. He said it was an example of where even in a town of 9,000+ people; it is difficult for a hospital to survive alone without joining together with another hospital. He suggested that it should be a lesson for our Communities as well.

He supports our two Hospitals joining together and will send a letter of support to Medicare for approval of our application for a combined hospital. He said he would also not support reducing Critical Access reimbursement for rural hospitals from 101% to 100% of reasonable costs. He said in reality, the reimbursement only amounts to about 86% of reasonable costs. We appreciate very much his support of joining our hospitals together and his ongoing support of rural healthcare in Kansas.

We encourage the Community to attend our Combined Board meetings the last Thursday of every month at 6:00 PM alternating between the Harper Senior Center and the Anthony Medical Center Education room. I am happy to speak to any community group. My telephone number is 863-633-9222 and my e-mail address is jchromik@hhd5.com.
